A young man spent a week in the hospital after masturbating inadvertently. A recent case report from Switzerland shows how a 20-year-old ended up with air leaking into his chest after some seemingly innocent self-love. The injury was not severe and he recovered well.
The man went to the emergency room with chest pain and trouble breathing, according to the report. His face was swollen and doctors could hear cracking noises as he breathed in and out. His symptoms began when he was lying in bed masturbating.
He had a condition called pneumomediastinum, which is when air from the respiratory system escapes into the chest between the two lungs. The man's air sacs were damaged and he needed high amounts of oxygen. He was put in the intensive care unit for observation and given preventative antibiotics and pain killers.
Physical trauma to the lungs can cause Pneumomediastinum. It can happen when a sudden increase in pressure in the chest causes a tear in the lung membranes, allowing air to leak out. Young men are more likely to suffer this kind of injury, and knowntriggers include an asthma attack, strenuous exercise, or violent vomiting.
The man had a history of mild asthma and denied any other risk factors. His masturbation had to be the culprit. The doctors looked through the medical literature and found a few reports of this injury brought on by sex. This is the first documented instance of self-love being to blame.
