Paul Smyth scores for Leyton orient
Paul Smyth's early goal set the tone for the game as Scunthorpe lost for the 26th time in League Two this season

After 72 years in the English Football League, Scunthorpe United will be going down to League Two.

The O's were in front early on when Paul Smyth cut in from the right wing and 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020 800-361-3020

Orient doubled their lead six minutes later as Theo Archibald curled a left-footed effort into the far corner of the net from the corner of the 18-yard box.

The Irons will buckled when Ruel Sotiriou headed in Jordan Brown's deep cross at the far post.

After the break, Sotiriou hit the post after Brown's through ball, while Watson did well to deny Archibald, and six minutes later, Kyprianou crashed an effort off the woodwork.

The loss leaves the Iron 16 points from safety with 12 left to play for.

Sorry Scunthorpe's 17th loss in 20 games

Keith Hill
Could Keith Hill lead Scunthorpe back to the EFL next season?

The writing has been on the wall for the North Lincolnshire side for the majority of the season.

The Iron have lost their last seven games, the most recent of which was a 7-1 defeat at the hands of the Broncos.

They were placed under a transfer embargo in the summer, which made it difficult for them to get into the top half of the table.

Neil Cox was dismissed as the club's boss in November and replaced by a former Rochdale, Barnsley and Bolton manager.

Hill lost one match in his first seven, but they never built up any momentum, and last spent a day outside the bottom two on December 28.

Iron fans saw their team play in the Championship in 2011 and compete in the League One play-offs in the last few years, but they will be sad to see their team go down.

They finished 20th in their first season back in the fourth tier after being demoted to League Two.

Dejected Scunthorpe United players
Scunthorpe have suffered a second relegation in three years

After a home defeat by fellow strugglers Barrow on March 15, Hill said that he had to change the culture at the club.

He told the radio station that he was trying to navigate the club through some "stormy moments" to build a positive future.

The Iron will be playing in a level next season that is certain, but the club is still unsure of what to do next.

Owner Peter Swann resigned as chairman last month and has acknowledged he is looking for someone to buy the club from him.

Hill will hope that he is given the chance to turn the club's fortunes around after Lee Turnbull returned to the club in the role of chief operating officer.

Analysis

Mike White is the host of Radio Humberside.

It is a sad, miserable, heart-breaking day for Scunthorpe United.

A club with a storied history that can list legendary England internationals like Ray Clemence and Kevin Keegan among its most notable former players, in addition to club icons such as Jack Brownsword and Barrie Thomas, and even dual-sport star Ian Botham.

In the mid-to-late 2000s, the Iron punched above their weight in the Championship under the management of Graham Alexander. Many fans believe that he was sacked in order to start the decline that has brought them to this point.

In the past few years, many fans have questioned the recruitment of the club's owner, Peter Swann, as he had too much input, something he has denied on several occasions.

Many fans were resigned to their fate a long time before the R was placed next to their name on the league table, as they were angered by the current state of the club.

I think the majority of Iron supporters do not share the same sentiment as they have seen that the National League can easily turn into a giant chasm that has swallowed up clubs without a hint.

Maybe recent talk and suggestion of a takeover could provide the required impetus needed to at least provide the right resources to Hill and his team - and breathe new life back into a club in desperate need of it - but that will have to wait for another day.
