Football fans were treated this week. The two new spring leagues began a long anticipated fight for attention as the NFL moved into the final stages of its preparations for the draft.

The USFL will revive a brand and team names that were first established four decades ago. The XFL made a series of announcements in order to preserve interest in its plans to return to the field in 2023.

The USFL has raced to the front of the starting line, moving from its public introduction to start in 11 months, while implementing an infrastructure that shares many similarities to the XFL. By the time the XFL gets back on the field, the USFL will be ahead of the curve, according to the executive vice president of football operations.

As part of this deep dive into the USFL's origins, ambitions and innovations, we will look at some other thoughts about the upcoming competition between the leagues.

Is this the same USFL from the 1980s?

No. The USFL was owned by a group of individual businessmen, including future President of the United States Donald Trump, and played for three seasons from 1983 to 1985 before dissolving. Brian Woods, the founder and chief executive officer of The Spring League, is now the president of football operations for the current USFL.

But they are using the USFL team names, right?

The names will be more about branding than representing local markets.

The league will play all of its games at Protective Stadium in Alabama. The playoffs semifinals and championship will be held in Canton, Ohio.

All of the team names reference original USFL markets.

  • The Birmingham Stallions are a group.

  • Houston Gamblers.

  • The Michigan panthers.

  • The Generals of New Jersey.

  • The New Orleans Breakers are a team.

  • The Philadelphia Stars.

  • The Pittsburgh Maulers are a group.

  • The Bandits are from the Bay Area.

The decision to use USFL branding has caused controversy. The representatives of the original owners filed a lawsuit this year. David Bernstein, an attorney for Fox Sports and the USFL, said the allegations are completely without merit, and a federal judge on Thursday decided against granting a preliminary injunction against the current league using the USFL brand.

Every alternative football league has failed. What makes the USFL any different?

The league is counting on two things to establish a foothold. Its expenses will be reduced by having a single-site format. It hopes to use its owner's resources to create a unique television product.

The opening game between New Jersey and Birmingham will have more production elements than any other football game Fox Sports covers. Two sky cams and multiple drones will be included. Two players from each team will wear helmet cams for every game and 16 players will be equipped with microphones that will air audio from both before and after the snap.

The broadcasts will introduce new technology to display ball placement relative to the line to gain, but officials will not use it to measure first downs.

It will be completely different to what people are used to seeing on television.

Is Fox Sports the sole broadcaster?

The USFL has an agreement to split the broadcasts of all 43 games. Each team will play 10 regular-season games. The championship will be played on July 3, with the top four teams playing two semifinals.

Who will people be watching?

The 2020 version of the XFL took a similar approach to the USFL, hiring head coaches with significant name recognition and pursuing quarterbacks that most college football fans would be aware of. They have previous head-coaching experience.

  • Skip Holtz was previously with Louisiana Tech.

  • Kevin was with Houston, Texas A&M and Arizona.

  • Previously, Jeff Fisher was with the Los Angeles Rams.

  • Previously, Mike Riley was with Oregon State, San Diego, and San Antonio Commanders.

  • Previously with Southern Miss and UNC.

  • Previously, Bart Andrus was with the Amsterdam Admirals, Toronto Argonauts, Omaha Nighthawks, and The Spring League.

  • Kirby Wilson has no previous head-coaching experience.

  • Previously, Todd Haley was with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Kyle Sloter of New Orleans and Kyle Lauletta of Pittsburgh are among the quarterbacks. One of the stars of the XFL in 2020 has since spent time on an NFL practice squad.

What is the talent level for USFL players?

The players in the USFL can not be on the rosters of the teams in the NFL. There was plenty of talent available for the USFL draft, in part because of the domino effect from the COVID-19 pandemic and related decisions to remain in school at the college level.

The new USFL did not consider anyone who was eligible for the NFL draft, unlike the original USFL. A pool of 1,000 players who are at least one year removed from college football but have some professional experience were identified.

The USFL has a total of 360 roster spots this season, and the league's coaches double as the teams general managers.

Fisher said that in a perfect world, a USFL player who has been in an alternate league, or has been in an NFL camp, has some experience as opposed to the guy who left college but hasn't done anything for three or four years.

Woods told al.com earlier this year that players on the active rosters will earn $4,500 per week and will have the chance to earn bonuses based on games won.

What should we expect for the on-field product?

That is probably the biggest challenge related to the USFL. Training camps lasted about three weeks after the coaches were hired. The league has a limit on the number of players it can have, which meant some creative scheduling and practice planning for coaches.

Fisher said that the players are practicing full speed. We have banged around a bit. You can't have an offensive drill against a scout team defense. When you go against each other, you have to start. You are competing. You can compete for six plays, and then you have to take a break.

The time crunch made coaches prioritize some of the situations they prepared for.

Fisher said that they looked at some things and wondered what if they had to kick off after a safety. There are going to be some situations that come up and it will be fun to watch how teams respond.

What will the games look like?

The USFL moved in the direction of the XFL in 2020 in hopes of speeding up the game and using rule innovation to maximize viewer attention. Some USFL rules will be different than the traditional NFL game.

The new Draft Day Predictor tool uses various factors to project the most likely picks at each first-round draft slot, estimated ranges of where top prospects could fall and more.

• ESPN's Draft Day Predictor

  • A 35-second play clock.

  • There are three options after a touchdown: a one-point kick from the 15-yard line, a 2-point try from scrimmage at the 2-yard line and a 3-point try from scrimmage.

  • If the team gains 12 or more yards, the team can kick off from their own 33-yard line.

  • Fisher predicted that the 25-yard line would eliminate touchbacks.

  • The winner of the best-of-three overtime format is the team with the most points after each team has three plays.

  • On punts, the gunners can only line up outside of the numbers and can not be double-teamed until after the ball is kicked.

  • A walk-off for defensive pass interference.

  • Multiple forward passes are allowed if they are all attempted behind the line of scrimmage.

The results of the USFL's punt scheme will be watched by the league as it contemplates its own changes to the play.

The USFL uses officials who are part of the NFL's officiating development program and are supervised by Mike Pereira, who is a Fox Sports analyst.

How will the USFL measure success?

The XFL and the AAF proved that demand exists for spring football, both from fans and players. The television ratings for college football games were a big part of the league's debut.

Getting through a full season will be the most significant marker after the XFL and AAF folded. When asked what success would look like, he said that he would crown a champion in Canton, Ohio, on July 3, and then pop a bottle of champagne. That is our definition of success.

The ultimate decision will be made by the ownership, as was the case with the AAF and XFL. There is a difference between being willing to use money and having it.

If the USFL makes it to that point, what would that mean for the XFL?

There is no reason to think that the XFL will not return to the field. He sees a USFL that has hit its stride competing against an XFL that will be going through all the growing pains that we are going to go through this year.

The rest of the experts break down the class.

The level of talent available at the time was a concern for the AAF, which explicitly pushed to beat the XFL to the field. USFL players signed two-year contracts, which could lead to a legal challenge if they try to sign with the XFL next year. The question moving forward is not about talent as much as it is about competing for the eyes of a finite pool of interested fans.

I don't know if it's a race to see who gets there first. It goes back to our partners. Where would the XFL be able to compete with us when we talk about the presentation of the product? I think it will be a challenge for them to be able to match us on the field, but how do you deliver that to the fan? I don't think there is a way for the XFL to match what we have created there in the ability to broadcast the USFL into television for the fans.

The XFL wouldn't comment.
