The Chancellor of Germany criticized a diplomatic snub by Ukraine for its president and defended Berlin's record on delivering weapons to the country.

Germany's largely ceremonial head of state had hoped to travel to Ukraine with his Polish and Baltic counterparts. He said Tuesday that his presence was not wanted by the Ukrainians at the moment.

The ambassador to Germany said the government would be happy to have him. It may be more difficult because of the snub.

The president would have liked to go to Ukraine, according to the president's spokesman.

It is, in any case, somewhat annoying, to say the least, because Steinmeier has called on Putin to withdraw his troops from Ukraine.

There is a discussion within the governing coalition about whether Germany should authorize sending heavy weapons such as tanks to Ukraine as that nation prepares to face a stepped-up Russian offensive in the east. After Russia invaded to supply arms to Ukraine, Germany broke with tradition and faced criticism from Kyiv for slowness in providing material.

Oleksiy Arestovych, an advisor to the Ukrainian president, told ARD that he didn't know why Steinmeier wasn't going to visit, but that he would like to see him.

A senior lawmaker with one of Germany's three governing parties said he didn't think Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was the right person to reject a visit by Steinmeier.

I cannot imagine the chancellor going to a country that designates the head of state as an unwanted person. Juergen Trittin, a governing party lawmaker, told the RND newspaper group that the move was a big propaganda success for Putin.

Before he became president, Steinmeier was the ex-Chancellor of Germany's chief of staff. Germany cultivated close energy ties with Putin during that time.

We failed on many points in Germany's policies toward Russia, Steinmeier said last week.

When asked when he would go to Ukraine, he only said that he had visited before the war and spoke to Zelenskyy.

The weapons we are delivering have made a very substantial contribution to the fight against Russia. He was tight-lipped on the possibilities of a bigger German contribution, but insisted that they were delivering.

The Foreign Minister of the Green party said on Monday that now is not the time for excuses, and thatUkraine needs more military material, above all heavy weapons.

The message was directed at politicians who were more hesitant.

The weapons that all the others are delivering are what we are delivering, according to Scholz.

Germany, which has Europe's biggest economy, has faced criticism for opposing a quick halt to deliveries of natural gas from Russia, which accounts for 40% of its gas supplies.
