According to reports, the official's comments were made during a board training session on diversity, equity and inclusion. Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese students get less D and F grades than other ethnic or racial groups, and Michael Allman asked if we know why. The superintendent said it was because the students are from rich families. James-Ward said that Asians from China who are able to make that journey are wealthy. She cited her own community as an example. In my community, in Carmel Valley, we had a large influx of Chinese families moving in, and that requires money. James-Ward said that a strong support system for students at home could be achieved by the entire family moving to the U.S. Some Latinx families simply don't have that type of money, and parents work jobs that leave them with no time to help their children. The official's remarks were criticized by the community. The Californians for Equal Rights Foundation said in a statement that her comments were deeply offensive, grossly inaccurate and intentionally divisive, which made her leadership role in a major school district questionable.NextShark
