Ukrainian authorities said on Thursday they seized assets belonging to a Ukrainian politician who was arrested earlier this week.

After escaping house arrest in February, Medvedchuk was captured by the security services of Ukraine. The leader of a pro-Russian opposition party was charged with treason last year.

The Ukrainian politician is a close ally of the Russian president.

If Russian forces had taken Kyiv, Medvedchuk was thought to be Putin's top choice to replace Zelenskyy. The proposal the Kremlin declined was for Russia Medvedchuk in exchange for Ukrainian prisoners.

The Washington Post reported that Ukrainian authorities seized 154 assets from Medvedchuk, including 23 houses, 32 apartments, 30 plots of land, 26 cars, and one yacht.

Forbes Ukranian reported last year that Medvedchuk was one of the richest people in the country. Zelenskyy moved to freeze his assets after he said that the three Ukrainian TV stations he owned were spreading Russian propaganda.

The $200 million dollar yacht belonging to Medvedchuk was seized by government officials after it docked in Croatia, according to Ukrainian media.

The mansion where Medvedchuk was placed under house arrest after he escaped featured a gold-gilded toilet and a 19th-century railway dining car, according to Ukrainian activists.
