  • An expert said that many people don't know they have diabetes.

  • Dark skin patches, slow-healing wounds, and frequent bathroom trips are some of the signs of diabetes.

  • Breath that smells like acetone can be a sign of a life threatening condition.

According to the American Diabetes Association, more than 10% of the US population has diabetes, and one out of every five of them isn't aware they have the disease.

Dr. Nuha El Sayed is the vice president of healthcare improvement for the American Diabetes Association.

It can take a long time to develop. She told Insider that a lot of times people walk around and don't know.

Some telltale signs can help you determine if you have diabetes. El Sayed said that changes to your skin, weight, and bathroom habits could all suggest problems with blood sugar control, although no single symptom necessarily means you have diabetes.

Developing darker patches of skin may be a sign of diabetes

El Sayed states that one less commonly discussed sign of diabetes is changes in to skin tone and texture, which can be seen under the arms or the nape of the neck.

The patches can be triggered by high levels of insulin. Acanthosis nigricans can occur in people of any skin tone.

It may be easier to detect in people with fair skin, but in people with darker skin you can still see it.

The texture of the skin can change as well.

Slow-healing wounds or frequent infections can be caused by high blood sugar

El Sayed said that if small injuries don't heal, you might have high blood sugar related to diabetes.

Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to elevated blood sugar levels, which can slow circulation. You may not recover from injuries as quickly as you would like, and open wounds may be more prone to infections.

You may be more at risk for yeast infections and skin infections.

Having to pee more often, or more urgently, is a red flag

Another sign of diabetes is more frequent urination.

It might be as many as 20 trips to the bathroom in a day for some people, but could also be more subtle, according to El Sayed.

She said that if you are suddenly going 8 times a day, that may be a problem.

Another warning sign is an inability to make it to the bathroom in time.

El Sayed said that if you restrict the amount of water you drink, that is not good.

Sudden, unexplained weight loss is reason for testing

Losing weight is an indicator that your body isn't able to manage it. El Sayed said that weight loss and other symptoms are good reasons to get tested.

If your breath smells like nail polish remover, you may need serious medical attention

In some cases, urgent medical care is required when there are many common signs of diabetes.

If someone is smelling acetone or nail polish on their breath, it could be a sign of a life-threatening condition called diabetes. El Sayed said that the telltale smell, shortness of breath, or changes to your mental state are reasons to seek medical help immediately.
