  • Kate James was the former assistant to Amber Heard.

  • Johnny Depp said that he was defaming him by suggesting that he abused her.

  • James said Heard yelled at her frequently and she never witnessed the couple fighting.

The former personal assistant to Heard testified in the defamation trial that she thought Heard was a boss from hell.

Heard is being sued by her ex-husband, Johnny Depp, for $50 million, on allegations that she defamed him by describing herself as a "figure representing domestic violence" in an op-ed in the Washington Post.

Heard claimed that he physically abused her on 10 occasions throughout their relationship. Heard filed for a protective order against the couple in court, with what appeared to be a bruise on her face.

The deposition was taken by Kate James, who worked as Heard's personal assistant for three years.

During that time, James said she didn't see any evidence of domestic violence when she visited the couple's respective homes.

She said Heard contacted her in distress after they returned to their home in Los Angeles from a private flight. Heard claimed in court that he kicked her and threw objects at her on the flight because he was upset about a romantic scene she had filmed with James Franco.

James commented that Heard found her behavior strange that day.

James said that the first thing that came to her mind was the fact that Heard went to the Chateau Marmont hotel instead of her home in West Hollywood.

Heard was surrounded by her friends at the pool.

Boss from hell

Heard was painted as a bad boss by James, who said she had 10 years of experience by the time Heard hired her.

She initially took the position for $25 per hour because she could pick up her son after school. James said that it became a full-time position about six months into the job. She said Heard screamed at her when she pushed back against the salary she was offered.

James recalled that she jumped out of her chair and put her face in his face, spitting in his face.

James said a handyman witnessed the exchange and was embarrassed to hear Heard speak to her like that.

James said the salary offer was very insulting, but she decided to take it because she had grandfathered in the ability to pick up her son from school and bring him to work with her.

The period in which Heard alleged in her countersuit that Depp abused her is the same as the time James worked for Heard. According to Heard, Depp used drugs and alcohol and worked himself up into episodes of violence in which he would physically assault her.

Heard belittled him for his age and physical shape, and often slapped or punched him, according to the allegations made by Depp. Heard's lawyer said that Heard wanted to hurt his career.

Heard flew into irrational rages, according to James. Heard yelled at her for leaving magazines out in the house that were supposed to be stored in the garage.

James testified that when Heard found the magazines lying out, she went absolutely ballistic.

James could not remember what Heard said, but he said Heard went into a rage.

Heard would send a barrage of abusive text messages to her, often in the early hours of the morning, James said.

James said the barrage would start between 2 and 4 a.m.

Heard often appeared intoxicated, she said.

In awe of Depp

James had nice things to say about Depp, who she described as a total Southern gentleman.

She said she met Depp at Heard's home in West Hollywood after she learned that she was dating the actor.

James first impressions of Depp were that he was peaceful, calm, and very quiet.

She said she never saw him be rude or yell at anyone while working with Heard.

She said that he was always completely passive.

She said that when she first started working with her son was 4 years old, Johnny took an interest in him.

James says her son was given guitar lessons, brought gifts back from vacations, and even played around with his elaborate makeup.

She said that he gave her son a guitar pick that he cherishes.

James said that she didn't think the relationship between Heard and Depp was on solid ground. She blamed Heard for that.

She said that it did not seem like a perfect relationship to her because of a lot of jealousy on her part.

She said some of Heard's text messages suggested she had personal issues, but they were never made clear to James.

She would occasionally send a text message about her mental state, but it was never clear what was going on.

Scorned ex-assistant?

Heard's lawyers tried to portray James as a bitter ex-employee through their questioning, which highlighted the awkward way that James was terminated in 2015.

After Heard returned home from her wedding in the Caribbean in February 2015, she told James that she needed to let him go in order to take care of her.

James said that she was shocked by the decision and wished that Heard would have given her some notice so that she could look for another job.

Heard asked to be put on the payroll of Johnny Depp and to stay in one of his homes since she was worried about making mortgage payments while out of work, but she was denied both.

James hadn't been working for Heard for more than a year by the time they split.

She admitted to meeting with him after he sent her a text message asking her to come over and fix her flabby ass.

James said she couldn't remember what was said when she went over to Depp's house, but she said Heard was likely discussed since they both knew each other.
