Mercedes-Benz brought a concept car to the New York International Auto Show on Wednesday that traveled over 600 miles on a fully charged battery.
The long-range demo is one of the ways in which the company is flexing against it. The Vision EQXX is a concept that raises the bar for what an EV can do by focusing on battery efficiency, lightweight materials and its 900-volt electric architecture. The first hurdle in bringing tech from development to commercial scale is showing off what is possible in a demonstration.
With its sleek silhouette and advanced engineering, the Vision EQXX could pave the way for a Mercedes production car to challenge battery-electric luxury sedan stalwarts.
Plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles will comprise half of the company's global sales by the year 2025. The move will help reduce its carbon footprint.
According to Mercedes, the concept car traveled from Germany to the South of France without needing to charge its battery. It is among the longest distances ever covered by an EV on a single charge.
The car arrived in Cassis with about 87 miles of range left.
The company said in a statement that the route profile from motorway to mountain passes and the weather conditions presented the VISION EQXX with a wide variety of challenges.
Mercedes will have nine models in its lineup by the end of the year. The S-Class executive sedan has an EPA-estimated range of 350 miles and is the flagship model. The EQS will be available as an SUV.
