Oklahoma softball would like, nay, DEMANDS everyone’s attention right now

Thirty-six wins and zero losses. The Oklahoma softball team's record is right now, breaking the all-time Division I record previously set in 1999 by UCLA. You would think that there have been hiccups with this streak. Maybe there were a few games where Oklahoma barely won. A lot of luck is required for a streak of this magnitude. Not really. It has nothing to do with luck. There was a game against Tennessee where the Sooners needed ten frames to win. Oklahoma has outclassed everyone they have come across. They have made other collegiate teams look like high school teams.

How large is the average margin of victory in their 36 games this year? Three runs a game? Five runs a game? How about seven? That would be a lot, right? Try nine. If the defense hadn't allowed 10 runs this year, the margin could be worse. They have only had five games where they end within five runs of the opposition. The Sooners have won every other game by at least eight.

The game is supposed to last seven. The mercy rule can be invoked if one team is leading their opponents by eight runs after five. The eight run rule has ended thirty of Oklahoma's games this year, meaning that they didn't get the chance to keep scoring runs for the whole game. Let me repeat that. The NCAA has a rule in place to limit the bloodshed in an absolute win, and Oklahoma has hit that threshold.

Their offense is very good. They have four players with at least 10 home runs this season, including the all-time DI leader in home runs, Jocelyn Alo. If every home run the Sooners hit was a solo shot, they would have recorded more runs than their opponents this season. They have more home runs than their opponents.

That is a testament to the team's pitching. The Sooners lead all Division I programs with an average of 0.6. They have thrown six no-hitters this year. The team still has 14 games left in the regular season, and they are tied for the most in program history. They have a no-hitter every week.
