The architects who designed Spurs Stadium have been hired by Manchester United to draw up plans for the redeveloped Old Trafford.
The aim of the work will be to increase the stadium's capacity.
The 63,000-seater stadium was built by both companies.
There is a capacity of 74,000 at Old Trafford.
The statement on the club's website said that work would begin immediately on developing options for Old United and studying their feasibility with the aim of significantly enhancing the fan experience.
Fans will be at the heart of the process, starting with a meeting between the consultants and the Manchester United fans advisory board later this month.
Last month, it was reported that United were considering a number of options for redevelopment, including demolishing Old Trafford and building a new stadium.
The South Stand is close to a railway line and has posed a problem because of it.
