Can ten Hag succeed at Manchester United? (1:33)

There are so many problems at Manchester United that Craig Burley isn't sure if ten Hag will be able to succeed there. (1:33)

The credentials of eight different managers were considered by Manchester United before they chose to appoint ten Hag.

According to sources, Mauricio Pochettino, Luis Enrique and Julen Lopetegui were on the final four-man list compiled by United's football director John Murtough, but the prospects of hiring a coach from a German club are not good. It became clear almost instantly that neither of them would be a realistic target.

According to a report on April 6, Ten Hag is likely to be confirmed as United's manager before the end of the month, after his team face PSV in the Beker final on Sunday.

The search for a manager capable of restoring the club to dominance in England and Europe has been going on for a long time, and the owners of United hope that it is finally over. It has involved two chief executives, the failed stop-gap appointment of Rangnick, and the poor results of the clubs where they are currently in charge.

The process of hiring a new manager has been impressive, according to sources who are unrelated to United.

The source told the outlet that "Pep Guardiola and Juergen Klopp aren't available and United were never going to get Nagelsmann out of Bayern." Tuchel is a real asset to the club, so he was not a credible option. You look at the market, who is capable and gettable, and United have considered them all. They have not overlooked anyone they should have spoken to.

When Solskjaer was dismissed, the initial favorites to take the United job were Rodgers and Mauricio Pochettino. According to a United source, Antonio Conte's demanding and detailed approach wouldn't work with the Old United squad.

Rodgers' success in winning multiple trophies in Scotland with Celtic and in the FA Cup with Leicester had earned him admirers within the United hierarchy. Two years later, Woodward considered appointing the former Spurs boss to replace Louis van Gaal, but he decided against it. Rodgers fell by the wayside, however, as the results of his team nosedived, while the contractual situation of his boss at Paris Saint-Germain ruled out a swift appointment.

Manchester United's performance againstEverton was calledpathetic by Julien Laurens.

United hired Rangnick to give them time to conduct a thorough and detailed search for the next manager. The search would be led by Murtough. The failed Super League plans had a marginal role in Woodward's decision to step down. Sources have said that Ferguson and Rangnick had minimal involvement in the process. In January, clarity to the process was brought about by Woodward's departure. The change of leadership brought a new sense of purpose and accelerated the final process because Arnold was not burdened by the mistakes of previous appointments.

Arnold wanted a new manager in place before the end of the season, and he asked Murtough to make a short list. Rodgers faded from the race before Arnold assumed the role of chief executive. It became clear to United that the only club role the former France player was likely to return to was at Paris Saint-Germain. According to sources, the World Cup killed United because the Spain coach had no intention of leaving his post before the World Cup. The Sevilla coach was considered because of his tactical and technical abilities. Sources have said that a concern within Old United was that they risked hiring another Unai Emery if they chose to appoint a coach with a successful track record at smaller clubs. While Emery has won four Europa Leagues with Sevilla and Villarreal, his inability to succeed at Paris Saint-Germain or the University of North Carolina may have impacted his candidacy with United.

Both Ten Hag and Pochettino were considered impressive enough to be appointed by United. Both had negative aspects. Ten Hag has no experience managing a club of United's size in a league as high-profile as the premier league, which may prove to be an insurmountable problem in the months and years to come. Sources say that there are no real concerns over his temperament and ability to step up to a job as big as United, as he has known Murtough since his time as Utrecht coach.

The issue was twofold. Real Madrid will make a move for the Argentine this summer, despite Carlo Ancelotti still being on course to win LaLiga and reach the European semifinals, and United were wary of being out-manoeuvred by Real at the eleventh hour. The French club threatened to put Mauricio Pochettino on gardening leave if he tried to force a move to United, as well as demanding a huge compensation package for their coach, who many expect to leave in the summer regardless.

The attraction of Ten Hag was that he is a rising star and one not yet scarred by failure, despite the fact that he was considered a safe bet by United. He has built a young and exciting team, delivered success, and shown an ability to exceed expectations. There is a freshness to Ten Hag that appealed to United and, despite reports that he was holding out for assurances over his control of the football side at Old Trafford, sources have said that the reality has been a much more straightforward negotiation.

Time will tell if United have got the right man or if they will be accused of hiring the cheapest, easiest option. The appointment will only be judged by what happens on the pitch, with a release clause of 2 million and a readiness to develop young players, he may turn out to be a less expensive option than Pochettino. If he wins, Ten Hag will be seen as priceless by a club that has made a lot of costly mistakes.
