The Wikimedia Foundation has donation options that include cryptocurrencies. The editor of the online encyclopedia wrote a proposal for the foundation to stop accepting cryptocurrencies as they are extremely risky investments.

Cryptocurrencies use a lot of energy, which is one of the biggest controversies surrounding them. That is the reason why Mozilla put its plans on hold after it announced that it would start accepting donations in the form of coins. According to the index, those processes use up to 204.50 Tera watt-hours of electricity per year, which is comparable to what Thailand uses. Wikimedia accepts a number of payment methods.

The proposal welcomed comments for three months. In all, 232 users voted in favor of the proposal. The people who argued in favor of cryptocurrencies explained that they provide safer ways to donate and that their counterparts in other countries have environmental issues of their own.

The Wikimedia Foundation may or may not grant the request, even though the community voted in favor of it. A person from the foundation told Ars.

"We are aware of the community's request that the Foundation consider ending our acceptance of donations in cryptocurrency. Our Fundraising team is reviewing the request and related discussions and we will provide additional information once they complete that process."
