The captain of a Russian billionaire's $325 million yacht was questioned by police in the Pacific nation who said the vessel arrived without customs clearance.
Two days after it arrived in the island nation, the yacht Amadea was investigated by police. The US, UK, and EU have sanctions against a Russian businessman named Suleyman Kerimov.
The 350-foot vessel set sail from the port of Manzanillo in Mexico on March 24 and will be moored in Lautoka, Fiji, on Tuesday. The yacht crossed the Pacific Ocean in 18 days.
An official at the National Police Command and Control Centre said that the captain of Amadea was questioned about how the luxury yacht docked without having clearance from customs.
All vessels must get approval from the Ministry of Trade and Transport, the Ministry of Health, and the Immigration Department if they want to dock in the Pacific island. The permanent secretary at the immigration department told The Fiji Times that they had not received any requests for Amadea to dock.
The country's health minister, Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete, was asked about the Amadea's presence in the country.
The US embassy and EU delegations told The Fiji Times on Thursday that they were working with authorities in the country regarding Amadea.
The police seized the vessel, according to local media reports. Chase Smith, the agent for Amadea who works for Baobab Marine, said the media reports were not completely factual. He didn't know who the owner of Amadea was.
The US embassy and the EU delegation didn't respond to Insider's request for comment.
Kerimov, who has a net worth of $14.3 billion, is among a group of people who have been sanctioned by the US and the UK over their ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Any of his assets in those countries could be at risk of seizure.
