According to The Elec, Apple has struck a deal with a new supplier of components for a periscope camera system.
Jahwa Electronics said on Wednesday that it plans to build plants to produce new optical image stabilization (OIS) actuators.
According to an earlier report by The Elec, Apple visited Jahwa Electronics new facilities during the first half of 2021, and it is likely that the investment is being made so that Jahwa can begin supplying Apple with OIS actuators from next year.
Apple usually asks suppliers to build production lines exclusively for its own parts and components, but the new facilities set to be built in Gumi would require Apple's approval once they are finished, and the whole process would take a year from now to conclude.
The OIS actuators is likely to be used for long-range cameras in the future. The components were linked to a periscope camera system to allow for increased optical zoom.
The first analyst to mention the possibility of the iPhone getting a periscope lens was Ming-Chi Kuo. The periscope lens will be a feature in the next iteration of the device, but according to analyst Jeff Pu, the lens type will arrive with the next iteration of the device, the iPhone 15 Pro.
Light entering the lens is reflected by a mirror towards the camera. The change in direction in which the light travels allows for a longerfolded setup inside phones that allow users to zoom in further without any blurriness.
