San Francisco Giants first-base coach Antoan Richardson and San Diego Padres third-base coach Mike Shildt hugged on the field before their game Wednesday, a day after Richardson was ejected following an incident that he said included Shildt making comments.
Richardson said Shildt told Kapler to control him on Tuesday night. Richardson said that he interpreted Shildt's comment as if he was a piece of property or enslaved.
On Wednesday, the two men chatted on the field and shook hands before addressing the media. They embraced after speaking.
Richardson, who is Black, said that he doesn't believe he's a racist. We want to bring awareness to a situation that is important for our community.
Shildt, who is white, said he appreciated Richardson saying he was not a racist.
Shildt said he was grateful for Antoan clearing that up. That is what I represent. I appreciate him clearing that up for me and my family.
I don't know Antoan's heritage. I can not walk in his shoes. He said that he has always had love and empathy in his life.
Richardson told reporters Tuesday night that he was ejected from the game because of an incident that began when Shildt approached the San Francisco bench.
Richardson asked Shildt what he needed. The Giants coach said Shildt told Kapler to control Richardson.
Shildt said that the Padres players and coaches were upset that the Giants stole second base. Richardson and Shildt exchanged words when Shildt went to coach third base.
There is some emotion running high. We looked at each other and then I looked in the dugout to find a couple guys that I have known for a long time, but they really don't need to be named, Shildt said.
I was looking for support to try to diffuse the situation. I couldn't find them and we had words. I am not going to get into who started it. We are past that point. He said that he could have handled it differently.
Shildt thinks something positive will come of the controversy.
The reality is that we handled this tough solution as men, with solution in our hearts. He said that it is a great example of how people can communicate regardless of background or color.
The Giants assistant coach took over at first base after Richardson was ejected. The first woman to coach in a Major League Baseball regular-season game was Nakken.
The Giants won by a large margin.
