The previous WH-1000XM3s were already among the best in the industry, so Sony didn't have to rethink its approach with the WH-1000XM4. The audio quality and ANC performance were the main reasons. The QN1 processor and dual noise sensor were put in by Sony. The results are a huge leap forward from their predecessors, but they get help from other areas.

Sony could have made these sound a little different, but instead chose not to change the sound signature at all, sticking with the bass-heavy balance that can sometimes overwhelm the mids and highs. The Sony Connect app can be used here. You can tinker with it however you want, so you can get more out of these superb cans.

Some help was needed for phone calls. It will be easier for callers to hear you as well. Sony has features that make it easier to amplify sound and volume during conversations. You can finally pair with two devices at the same time, so you can listen to music on one device and take calls on the other.

Sony did not change the design at all. They look similar, but should feel that way as well. It should be good news if they are comfortable, as the battery can last 32 hours per charge, depending on volume and ANC. Plug them in for 10 minutes and you can get up to five hours of playing time. You cannot charge and listen at the same time.

Sony WF-1000XM4 True Wireless Earbuds

You are in a good spot if you have to beat yourself to get a different level of excellence. That is Sony's earbuds in a nutshell. One of the best pairs of earbuds you can buy right now is the WF-1000XM4 and they are top-class successors to the already superb WF-1000XM3. They may not be the prettiest available, but they are still worth the price for the performance you get.

The impact is small, and with good reason. It gave you more opportunities to modify the soundstage using the equalizer in the Headphones Connect app. The mids complement the extra bass and highs you can easily pull out through the EQ, and they get the most out of this arrangement. If there isn't enough thump, you can always use the Extra Bass feature to increase the bass. The audio feature is good for listening to content with a spatial effect. These earbuds also support Sony's LDAC codec, so you can listen to hi-res audio.

How well they fit will matter. Sony tried to trim some fat to make them easier to wear, but you may or may not like how they did it. The ANC only improves if you can get good passive noise isolation. The downside is that features like adaptive sound control don't feel like they have taken a big step forward. The IPX4 rating does offer better water and sweat resistance, but you should still avoid too much water and keep them clean after you sweat on them.

An extra three charges from the case increase the battery life by up to eight hours per charge. It's even better when you have a smaller case. It works with wireless charging as well. Fast charging is possible with theusb-c. Plug it in for 10 minutes, and the earbuds will play for up to 90 minutes.

Best over-ear: Sony MDR-7506

If you want sound quality specifically, wireless headphones aren't always the best route. The Sony MDR-7506 show that wired audio is better than wireless audio. The classic headphones have a slightly boosted bass that makes them sound warmer. The mids are balanced, and the treble is boosted, giving them a consumer-friendly sound.

The MDR-7506 are very comfortable. The padding over the head is decent, and the ear cups are large. The leather is susceptible to wear and tear. The ear cups are large and uncomfortable for people with wider ears.

The MDR-7506 are very portable. They fold into themselves, which reduces the footprint by half when stowed away. The included cable is non-detachable, which means that you will have to replace them if the cable breaks. 3.5mm is the most widely used audio port. The coiled cable will help reduce the likelihood of cable tearing.

Best bass: Sony WH-XB900N

The WH-XB900N are bass-heavy and are known for that. Sony's Extra Bass collection aims to pump even more bass into your ears. The WH-XB900N are low-end-forward, with a midrange and treble that is slightly recessed, giving the headphones an overall darker sound signature.

The headphones are comfortable beyond the bass. The headband feels like a pillow and the ear cups are big, making them comfortable to wear for hours. The headphones won't feel like they are crushing your head because the force isn't strong.

The ANC's battery life is comparable to that of the WH-1000XM3. The XB900N also has a charging port, which is something the WH-XB900N shares with the WH-1000XM3. You will get 60 minutes of listening time with a 10-minute charge.

Best neckbuds: Sony WI-C400

If you want earbuds that you don't have to worry about losing, neckbuds are a great option. The best neckbuds are made by Sony.

The lightweight design of the WI-C400 makes them comfortable. They have several ear tip sizes in the box, which will help with the fit. Their battery life is up to 20 hours on a single charge. They use an old Micro-USB for charging their batteries.

The sound quality of the WI-C400 is decent. The bass response is non-existent. The midrange can sound weird. The sound of the treble is boosted by a large amount. The microphones of the WI-C400 are above average and can block out a decent amount of background noise without making your voice sound robotic.

Best value: Sony WF-C500

Considering their price point, the Sony WF-C500 hold up well. You don't get ANC support here so you need a nice, comfortable fit when putting them on. If these buds plug your ears well, you will be able to block out noise. They are nice and snug, but not as durable as their IPX4 rating would suggest. They need to be wiped clean after you work out in them.

The sound of Sony earbuds is more crowd-pleasing than anything else, so you should feel pretty satisfied with the results, even if you don't get the kind of sonic prowess you pay for. The good news is that you can use the Headphones Connect app to modify the sound within the included audio component, as well as access the audio content that supports it. If you are concerned about that, they are limited to the SBC and AAC.

The battery life exceeded expectations with up to 10 hours per charge, which is higher than most pairs out there. If you don't have an ANC, the volume level is the biggest drain on the battery. You can get back and play quickly with the included charging cable. You will need to charge them more often if you listen to them on a daily basis because the case only gives you one extra charge.

The Sony WH-1000XM4 is the top Sony headphones. They are the best noise-canceling headphones on the market with their mix of audio quality and features.

The WH-1000XM4 has an excellent app that supports them with a variety of sound settings, as well as improved call quality, a strong battery life that lasts up to 32 hours on a single charge, and a comfortable fit that should suit most people. If you still have a phone with a headphone jack, you can get high-definition audio over a wired 3.5mm option.
