The mystery of why humans die around 80 may have been solved by scientists.

The researchers found that the lifespan of a species can be determined by the speed of DNA errors.

South Asian rats can live for just six months, while bowhead whales can live for 200 years.

The key to longevity, according to experts, is size, with smaller animals burning up energy more quickly, requiring a faster cell turnover, which causes a speeder decline.

The speed of genetic damage could be the key to survival, according to a new study from the Wellcome Sanger Institute.

It helps explain how a five-inch long naked mole rat can live for 25 years, the same as a giraffe.

When scientists looked at their rates, they were very similar. Naked mole rats and giraffes suffer from 93 and 99 genes a year, respectively.

The mice only live for 3.7 years because they suffer 796 mutations a year. The average human lifespan in the study was 83.6 years.

There are genetic changes in all cells that are harmless, but some can start a cell on the path to cancer or impair normal functioning.

It was surprising to find a similar pattern of genetic changes in animals as different from one another as a mouse and a tiger.

The most exciting aspect of the study is the fact that lifespan is proportional to the rate of change.

This suggests that there may be a role for genes in aging.

The team analysed genetic errors in the stem cells of 16 species of mammal and found that the longer the lifespan, the slower the rate at which they occur.

There is a critical mass of errors after which a body is unable to function, according to the average number of mutations at the end of lifespan.

‘Ageing is a complex process’

The variation was less than the variation in body size, which ranged up to 40,000 fold.

The researchers believe the study will lead to better understanding of the aging process and the timing of death.

The senior author of the study, Dr Inigo Martincorena, said that aging is a complex process, the result of multiple forms of damage in our cells and tissues.

Since the 1950s,matic mutations have been speculated to contribute to aging, but studying them has been difficult.

With the recent advances in technology, we are able to investigate the roles that somatic mutations play in aging and multiple diseases.

The journal Nature published the research.
