The 13th year of a harsh dry spell has forced the country's capitol to ration water.
The city of Santiago recently revealed a four-tier plan that will apply to 1.7 million people. The first level is a green alert that encourages the use of underground water. The second and third stages focus on reducing water pressure. The red alert stage is when water is rationed via rotating water cuts. Most of Santiago's water supply comes from the Maipo and Mapocho rivers, which are monitored by the alert system.
The system is necessary to make sure that everyone has access to water.
More cities need to learn how to deal with extreme weather and lack of water because of the climate crisis. The United States is going to experience a lot of dry weather this year. California residents have been asked to reduce their water use, and future water rationing is a possibility.
The Sierra Nevada mountain range's water supply is in danger this year because of the low snow cover. There was only 2.5 inches of snow near Lake Tahoe, when there should be several feet. Recent photos of Lake Powell show it nearly dried up.
