  • Putin is thought to have picked Medvedchuk to replace Zelenskyy as a puppet leader.

Russia shot down the swap of captured Kremlin ally Viktor Medvedchuk for Ukrainian prisoners, seemingly cutting ties with the person who has close personal connections to Putin.

The spokesman for the Kremlin told reporters on Wednesday that Medvedchuk is not a citizen of Russia and has nothing to do with Putin's special military operation.

He is a foreign political figure and we don't know if he wants Russia to help resolve the situation against him.

After escaping from house arrest in February, Medvedchuk was captured by the security service of Ukraine. The tycoon was accused of being a traitor.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy offered Russia the chance to swap kidnapped Ukrainians for Medvedchuk, who chairs a pro-Russian opposition political party.

Putin and Medvedchuk are close friends. The two have gone on vacation together and Putin is the father of Medvedchuk's youngest daughter.

If the Ukrainian government were to fall, Medvedchuk was thought to be Putin's choice to replace Zelenskyy, and he has an estimated net worth of $620 million.

The Obama administration imposed sanctions on Medvedchuk because he undermined democracy in Ukraine.

Nikita Angarski translated them.
