Meta has been eager to stake its future on augmented reality and the metaverse, but a new report from The Verge might shed light on exactly what the social media giant hopes to deliver. According to anonymous sources, the company is planning to launch its first augmented reality glasses in 2024. The model would be lighter, more advanced and a third iteration in 2028. The initial model would be independent of your phone, but you would need a phone-shaped device to handle computing and a wristband to control it.

This first model is said to be based on the operating system and could offer a wide field of view, stereo audio, and 3D visuals. The centerpiece feature would be communication with other people'sholograms, like Meta portrayed in a video that accompanied its big rebrand last fall. The chief executive thinks this will provide a more interesting experience than video calling.

A less exotic Wearable might be released by the tech firm. A pair of phone-paired smart glasses would show notifications. In 2024, Hypernova would debut.

The first Project Nazare glasses have modest expectations. Meta might only sell the eyewear to enthusiasts and developers. They seem to be seen as crucial by the man. According to a former staffer, a launch that shakes up the industry and redefines the company is what Mark Zuckerberg wants with the augmented reality glasses.

It's a matter of whether or not they fulfill that ambition. Plans for a custom OS and staff shuffles have been scrapped. The prototype hardware has some limitations. It is four times heavier than conventional glasses and musters and has just four hours of battery life.

It is not hard to see why Meta and Facebook would pour so much energy into the glasses. Meta has a negative reputation due to privacy issues. Competition like TikTok eats away at its core business as it struggles with flat user growth. Meta will hopefully be able to leave scandals behind and regain its innovator status with the help of the glasses.
