San Francisco Giants coach Antoan Richardson, who was ejected Tuesday, accused San Diego Padres coach Mike Shildt of yelling an expletive at him that was reminiscent of racism.
Richardson gave a lengthy explanation for his third-inning ejection after San Francisco defeated San Diego. The Giants first-base coach said the incident started when Shildt approached San Francisco.
Richardson said Shildt, who is white, yelled, "You need to control that motherf---er" to the Giants, which prompted Richardson's reaction and eventually his ejection.
Richardson told reporters that he went to the top step and said, "Excuse me?" The crew chief decided to throw me out of the game.
I say this because his words were disproportionately unwarranted and reeked of racism when he referred to me as "that motherf---er." We need to understand what happened tonight.
The second part of that is that I was thrown out by the umpire, which is really unfortunate, because that coach will continue to have conversations like that with people like me.
Richardson said he did not curse or use profanity at any point during the incident, but was told he was ejected for inciting.
Richardson asked if he was being an instigator after the umpire said he was.
Neither Shildt nor Bob Melvin commented on the incident after the game. In his first season with the Padres, Shildt has been the manager for three-plus seasons.
Kapler told reporters that he supports Richardson, even though he didn't hear what Shildt said.
Kapler said that he trusts Antoan's judgement and that anything that was said was not out of control. He did not start any part of this.
The Giants used first-base coach Nancy Nakken as their coach for the rest of the game, making her the first woman in Major League Baseball history to coach in a regular-season game.
Richardson said that she was proud of her and that she did a great job.
Richardson, who is from the Bahamas, said he shared his account of the incident because he wants to help people who look like him.
Richardson said it was important that we bring awareness to this.
I share this story for other people that look like me. I know I have the full support of my teammates and others, so I would let them down if I did not share this story tonight.
