The company announced at the NY automotive forum that it will make electric vehicles in the US starting in December. It is part of a grand plan to invest $7.4 billion in the US by 2025.
The Santa Fe hybrid will be produced at the Montgomery, Alabama plant in October. 200 new jobs will be created at the plant, which is its only manufacturing facility in the US. The Montgomery assembly line is where the company builds the Santa Cruz, Santa Fe and Tucson SUVs.
At the Guangzhou Auto Show in China, the Genesis GV70 EV was revealed. The company has yet to announce US specifications, which may be why it didn't mention theGV70 EV in its press release. The Korean version will come with an 800 watt charging system and a 77.4 kWh battery that will give it a range of about 400 km.
The ICE version of the GV70 has two electric motors that produce 482 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of Torque. The interior will be similar to the one on the current gas-powered GV70, according to photos.
It took Hyundai awhile to establish US EV production dates, following similar announcements by Toyota and Volkswagen. The three companies that operate non-union plants in the US opposed the plan to give tax incentives to unionized automakers. The unionized workers in Korea want the company to boost domestic EV production rather than investing abroad. US vehicle import tariffs are 2.5 percent for cars and 25 percent for pickup and SUVs.
