Gilbert Gottfried, who died this week at the age of 67, is remembered for never being afraid to cross the line.

His version of a raunchy old standard called "The Aristocrats", that he told during a celebrity roast in New York shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks, stands out the most.

He told HuffPost in 2015 that he wanted to be the first to make a bad-taste joke about September 11th.

The crowd booed.

One guy yelled out too soon, which I thought meant I didn't take a long enough pause between the setup and the punchline.

He decided to go in a different direction after losing the audience.

He said that he would go to the bottom level of hell and do the Aristocrats joke.

His effort was well received by the crowd. Yet he couldn't help but notice an irony.

They were cheering and applauding and it proved to be a terrorist attack? It was bad taste. Is it bestiality or incontinence? He said it was good taste.

The 2005 documentary "The Aristocrats" featured a take on the joke by Gottfried.

If it isn't clear already, there is some graphic language involved.
