According to media reports, a British man from Newark-on-Trent was forced to surrender to Russian forces in the city of Mariupol after running out of food and weapons.

According to The Guardian, a former care worker joined the Ukrainian Marines and took an oath to defend the Ukrainian people. According to the Evening Standard, he is a member of the Ukrainian Marines.

A friend of Aslin is running the account while he is in Ukraine, The Guardian reported.

It has been 48 days since we tried to defend Mariupol, but we have no choice but to capitulate to the Russians. Aslin's account posted a message from a fighter on Tuesday. It has been a pleasure, everyone. I hope this war ends soon.

The mother of Aslin said that he and his unit had put up one hell of a fight and that he had called her to say they had no weapons left.

The account of Aslin said he had joined the Ukrainian military as a legal combatant.

"Mercenary, a word idiots try to attach to him, has a defined legal meaning," the account wrote. One of the criteria for identifying mercenaries is not a member of the armed forces of a Party to the conflict.

According to Russian state media, Russia has said that foreign mercenaries fighting in Ukraine wouldn't be treated as prisoners of war.

According to The Guardian, Aslin fought for the US against the Islamic State in Syria.

The city of Mariupol has been under siege for more than 40 days and has fallen into the hands of Russian-backed rebels. At least 10,000 people died due to the fighting in the city, according to the Mayor.
