Bill Gates gave a key note speech at the conference on Tuesday, and he mentioned his 2015 talk in which he warned that we weren't ready for a Pandemic.

Gates said he hoped the current COVID-19 crisis would prompt his audience to pay more attention to his advice about how to prevent another Pandemic.

When I was on this stage in 2015, I was one of many people who said we needed to get ready. Gates said that the speech was watched by a lot of people, but most of the views were after it was too late.

The world is not ready for the next epidemic and viruses pose the greatest risk of global catastrophe compared to other threats to humanity, according to the 2015 talk by Gates. A video of his presentation has been viewed more than 36 million times.

If over 10 million people are killed over the next few decades, it is most likely to be a highly infectious virus. Gates said at the time that it was not missiles, but microbes.

More than 6 million deaths have been caused by the COVID-19 epidemic. The US has had more deaths than any other nation.

The US cut funding to virus prevention agencies shortly after Gates urged governments to invest in healthcare and medicine technology. The global-health-security unit of the National Security Council was shut down by the Trump administration.

It's hard to overstate how bad it has been, Gates said. Your survival depended on a number of factors.

Gates said rich countries should come together to implement systems that would help prevent the next large scale epidemic while the tragedy of COVID-19 is still fresh in our minds. He said that world leaders have taken less action than he expected.

The United Nations was created after World War II, Gates said. I would be stunned if we didn't go forward with something close to what I'm laying out.
