  • The clinicians at the ER did not think that the headaches and numbness were a migraine.

  • He went into a coma after a seizure the next day and was later diagnosed with a brainstem clot.

  • A year later, he cannot walk or talk. His family wants people to know the signs of a stroke.

When he first heard about his headaches and sensitivity to noise, he wasn't too worried. He suppressed his pain so he could play basketball with his friends.

A few of the friends, who are nurses, urged him to go to the ER when he was on the court. While there, he had headaches, light sensitivity, blurry vision, dizziness, and numbness on one side of his body, according to his girlfriend.

He wanted all the lights off and he was covering his eyes.

The clinician told them that it was a smilvy, gave them an IV and sent them on their way. The mom had to carry him out of the car.

The next day, he woke up to a seizure. She called an ambulance, but the EMTs didn't help her. One person said it was probably a cold.

At the hospital, clinicians suspected drugs, but his stepmom said that he doesn't use drugs or drink. They thought it was a reaction to the vaccine. It wasn't until the next day that the family learned that he had a serious stroke and had only a 3% chance of survival.

A neurological surgeon told the hospitals that they missed their window to operate on the clot in his brain stem.

The family wants to raise awareness about stroke symptoms in young people. The diagnosis is not something you expect to hear, and it sends chills up and down your spine.

A year later, Ortiz relies on his family for care

He was in a medically-induced coma for several weeks and underwent several more in-patient rehabs. He can't speak, walk, or take care of himself one year later, despite being fully aware of what is going on.

He graduated from a technical college and was about to apply for an apprenticeship when he had a stroke.

He is continuing to undergo speech therapy and is also taking aquatic and music therapy. He uses eye movements and a book to communicate with his family. His mom and stepmom work from home to care for him.

You sit here, and you look at your son, and you want to become this man in the world that you want to be.

The stepson is in amazing spirits, according to the stepson's stepmother.

He wants to walk again. She said that he wants to bring awareness to this and just live a fulfilled life again.

Strokes are unusual in young people

Donald M. Lloyd-Jones, president of the American Heart Association, told Insider that only 10% of strokes occur in people younger than 50.

When there is a disruption of blood flow to the brain, it is called a stroke. Symptoms include facial droop, arm weakness, and speech difficulty. His family doesn't know why he had a stroke.

Some factors, like race and a family history of strokes, are not controllable, but others, like not smoking and managing blood pressure, are. Smoking can increase the risk of estrogen-containing hormonal birth control. There have been a few reports of strokes after the vaccine, but they are very rare.

The severity and length of any complications that follow if patients are treated quickly can include infections, pneumonia, paralysis, speech and swallowing difficulties, memory loss, and even a propensity for profanity.

Lloyd-Jones said that minutes matter in terms of saving brain tissue and brain function.

If you think something is wrong with a loved one, you should speak up. Since young people and women are more often dismissed by medical professionals, she wonders what would have happened if her husband had taken the ER that first night.

She said that things might have been different for them.
