Goblin mode is a term for giving up on hygiene and normal social interaction for those living in blessed ignorance. It hit the mainstream last month, when a later-debunked article claimed that Julia Fox said that the Chicago rapper didn't like it when she went goblin mode.
The term "goblin mode" struck a lot of people as Fox claims to have never said anything about it.
Its meaning is quite subjective, but generally invokes images of a depressed person who doesn't want to look good.
Is Musk suggesting he has entered a disheveled and unkempt state, excusing his latest erratic behavior? He announced that he had joined the board and then back off a day later.
He is signaling familiarity with the concept. He has previously claimed to live in a small box, and has been known to sleep under his desk and wear the same outfit day after day.
It's best not to read too much into it. Musk posting a stolen meme is par for the course. The New York Times said that the timing of this particular tweet suggested to institutions that are storied.
After he refused the seat at the table, the analysis concluded that Musk is here to stay.
Musk probably posted the meme because he saw it was funny and thought it was a joke.
