Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the Security Service of Ukraine released images Tuesday of Ukrainian politician and oligarch Viktor Medvedchuk in handcuffs, claiming they captured the supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin weeks after he escaped from house arrest.
The Ukrainian Security Service claimed on its website that it had arrested Medvedchuk in a multi-level special operation.
The Ukrainians claimed that Medvedchuk was hiding from justice and was wearing the Ukrainian military uniform.
In February, Ukrainian officials said Medvedchuk, a member of the parliament and a former leader of the pro-Russia For Life political party, escaped house arrest days after Russia invaded Ukraine.
After being accused of treason, Medvedchuk was placed on house arrest. According to the Washington Post, the politician is one of Russia's most prominent allies in Ukraine, and he has been a close friend of Putin for decades. In response to Russia's annexation of the peninsula, Ukraine began to impose sanctions. Zelensky froze Medvedchuk's assets in 2021.
One of the 11 parties Zelensky suspended last month was For Life. The party removed him from leadership after he escaped from house arrest.
$620 million. Forbes Ukraine estimated Medvedchuk's net worth to be in the range of $65 million to $90 million. Zelensky blocked three Ukrainian television stations that Medvedchuk owned because he claimed they were spreading propaganda. According to ABC News, Zelensky's spokesman said that the channels were blocked because they were being used as "one of the instruments of war against Ukraine." It's not clear if Medvedchuk still owns the stations.
The U.S. government claimed last year that Medvedchuk was an option to replace Zelensky as a pro-Russia figurehead.
