Image for article titled How to Convert Celsius to Fahrenheit Without Doing Any Math

I'm pretty familiar with metric units. I know that 20 kilograms is 44 pounds and that 5 kilometers is 3 miles. celsius temperatures have always been a bit of a mystery to me.

Celsius and Fahrenheit degrees have different baselines and are different in size. In the dead of winter, it is bitterly cold. Zero degrees Celsius means that you are on the verge of a rain shower or snow flurry.

You need to add and subtract to convert, because of the two factors. That was the case when we covered a way to quickly convert from one system to another, using 2 and 30 as the conversion factors.

memorize four numbers and flip them to convert, that's a better way to go. You can add or subtract 12 to get each of the others if you memorize one of them.

The trick is here.

  • 04 degrees Celsius is 40 degrees Fahrenheit (chilly!)
  • 16 degrees Celsius is 61 degrees Fahrenheit (hoodie weather)
  • 28 degrees Celsius is 82 degrees Fahrenheit (balmy!)
  • 40 degrees Celsius is 104 degrees Fahrenheit (stay inside and crank up the A/C)

You're just reversing the digits, 16 becomes 61, get it? You get the idea now that you have read it. The temperature is four degrees Celsius and 104 degrees.

If you're on vacation and they tell you it's going to be 32, you know that it's more than 28 degrees, but still below 40 degrees. It is a tank top and shorts weather.

If it is 10 degrees, it will be cooler than 61 degrees, but warmer than 40. You will be good if you bring a jacket.

It's a bonus fact that -40 is -40 in both scales, if you're ever going to vacation in the northern part of the world.
