A shooting on the New York City subway hit especially close to home for the Brooklyn Nets, with Kevin Durant and his teammates reacting to the news with shock.
At least 10 people were shot at the 36th Street station, which is located a half mile from the Nets practice facility in Brooklyn. At least 16 people were injured, and police are still looking for the shooter, who fled the scene in a construction vest and a gas mask.
It is devastating, I don't know the details. To hear the sirens out front of the practice facility and see so much commotion going on outside, you hope and pray for the best for everyone involved.
When he first heard about the situation through texts from the team, nobody knew how bad it was.
They sent us a text saying there might be some traffic, but I don't know why. I hate violence. Hopefully we can figure out the details and get everybody to safety and get everybody the help that they need, but it is a tough situation right now.
After getting to the facility, the players began to learn more about what was happening at the 36th Street station. There were sirens from police cars and ambulances all around the facility.
Guys heard stories on social media, and hopefully we can get this figured out. I know it is a couple people shot. It is an unfortunate situation. Hopefully they can figure it out.
Nets coach Steve Nash said he didn't know about the tragedy until right about the time the game started.
Nash said they were devastated for the community and for those directly involved. I don't know a lot of the details, so I don't want to get too far into it, but we are all concerned for everyone involved. Try to prepare and be focused on our task at hand.
The league continues to monitor the situation, as the Nets prepared as if the game would go on. The Nets staff walked by to see what was happening as television coverage of the shooting played on the monitors.
Goran Dragic, a veteran guard, couldn't believe how close the shooting was to the Nets facility. People in the building started getting emergency notifications on their cellphones as the media interviews ended.
Jordan Ott was saying, "You see that yellow building?" That is where that happened, Dragic said. It was very close. I have been in the subway a couple of times, but now I don't know. I have doubts.
