I visited Guy Fieri's Kitchen and Bar in Boston. The place felt like it was Fieri's and the vibe was that of a nice restaurant. This is a great spot to go with friends and the food was good but not great. One of the Food Network's most recognizable figures is Guy Fieri. His frosted tips and goatee are a regular feature on the channel, with shows like Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and Guy's Grocery Games. He has found time to open restaurants around the globe. The chef's website states that this particular chain of restaurants is a trip to Flavortown and that features signature recipes from Fieri. I was excited to try some of his dishes. You will not forget your welcome to Flavortown. The minimal bustle of downtown Boston makes this Guy's Kitchen and Bar stand out. It is kitty-corner from the coffee shop where Tom Holland and Zendaya had a date while in the area. The restaurant's crest appears to be a flaming bald eagle and shield on the windows. The host warmly welcomed us when we entered the restaurant and Fountains of Wayne sang about their desire for the mom of the boy. It was easy to get a reservation for three. It was booked the day before for a dinner party. The restaurant was busy and I would suggest making a reservation. The vibe at the restaurant is very nice. The front of the restaurant has a big bar with TVs playing sports. It might feel like you were in a pub or a nice sports bar if it weren't for the "Flavortown" plastered across the back wall or Fieri's signature tattooed on the cups and booths. I saw heads nodding to the beat while The Outfield belted out "I don't wanna lose your love, toniiight" over the speakers when we sat at our own high-top booth. The atmosphere was fun but laid-back, with a slight edge, and a promise of outrageousness, like Fieri's on-screen persona. The menu featured Fieri's take on American bar food. The server suggested I start with the Caliente Margarita. The pour was generous and the drink was good. It came with a rim made of chili and it woke my taste buds up. I knew I had to order some of Fieri's signature dishes. I got the famous Trash Can Nachos, which were released from the small trash can, at our table. They were topped with cheese and black beans. Each chip was covered in cheese and sour cream, but still had some bite. I got a burger and fries that looked pretty good. It came with three different types of fries, and it seems like an on-brand question for the establishment. Each cut of fry was seasoned perfectly. The food was delicious. The BBQ wings were one of my favorites. They were topped with fried onions and tossed in Fieri's barbecue sauce. The wings were cooked perfectly and had a sweet and salty flavor. The portions were generous and reasonably priced. I shared all of the dishes with two friends. I was excited when it was time for dessert. By the time our server brought the dessert menu, I was singing along to the song from the speakers. I got a chocolate whiskey cake and an espresso martini. The martini was simply presented and excellent. The cake tasted like a doctored version of a Betty Crocker mix, but that is not a bad thing. It was topped with a salted whiskey caramel sauce. The experience was exactly what I wanted from a visit to a Guy Fieri restaurant, and a good reminder that not everything has to be perfect. A show is what I got from Fieri, who often styles himself as more of a showman than a chef. Even if the food wasn't memorable, the environment was fun and festive. If perfectly made food was the goal, I might mention that the burger was over cooked and lost in the chaos of ingredients added to it, or that the nachos felt a little heavy. The cake was basic and sweet. I did not expect the food to be mind-blowing. I got a fun atmosphere with angsty classic rock, decent food with exaggerated flavors and presentations, and kind and casual service. At the end of the day, we paid about $150 for three people to leave stuffed, having enjoyed multiple dishes and drinks.
