At this point, it's hard to say that they're leading the streaming wars in terms of quality content. Over the last year or two, there have been two series that have produced some absolutely incredible series that have been unable to match the quality of the other series. It would be Apple TV Plus.
The disparity is starting to widen if you look at the content slate in 2022. Each service has given us a series so far this year.
The Gilded Age, Peacemaker, Julia, Minx, Our Flag Means Death, raised by Wolves, and Tokyo Vice are all part of the HBO Max.
The Afterparty, Servant, Slow Horses, and Severance are included in Apple TV Plus.
In From the Cold is a film about the invention of Anna, Pieces of Her, Bridgerton, and Vikings Valhalla.
Some of this may be a matter of preference, but I don't think it's particularly close. At this point in time, shows like Euphoria are popular among Gen Z. Severance and Pachinko are two of the best new series. Julia is going to win an award.
This list doesn't include shows outside the window in 2022. Station Eleven, The White Lotus, The Sex Live of College Girls, and Succession are all on HBO. Ted Lasso, For All Mankind, The Morning Show, Dickinson, Mr. Corman, Foundation, and Apple TV Plus with Mythic Quest.
I can name some good shows on the internet, but it feels like there are more good shows on the internet these days. They have a long history of providing high quality original content, and they are continuing to do that with HBO Max. Apple TV Plus has been very impressive. After a slow start, they have been able to find some really great gems, and are now producing must-watch television on a more consistent basis than their rivals. They just won the Oscar for Best Picture.
Paramount Plus and Peacock are not included in this conversation because they are still finding their footing and have far, far fewer must-watch series. Disney Plus is a must-own for any family, but right now you can only watch one show at a time. I don't think producing less must-watch content is a bad thing, as long as it's on the older channels.
If you can expand your budget to a few more services, like Apple or HBO Max, I think you'll find them to be more value for your money. We will see what the rest of the year holds.
