Staying safe online is a challenge in the internet age. The worst hacks of the year show how difficult it is to avoid an attack. That's what Firewalla Purple wants to solve, it's a small firewall and a virtual private network that can be used to protect your home network from cyberattacks.

The configuration is difficult, but the Firewalla Purple comes with a mobile app that allows you to see and control internet traffic going into and out of your home. It can be intimidating at first, but you don't need networking expertise to use it.

The risk of being hacked looms large even if you set up your smart home correctly. Every day, we are exposed to risk because of the flaws in everything from Windows to Facebook. Jerry Chen says someone hacked his daughter's baby camera. He set out to create a lineup of devices to safeguard home networks, and the Purple is in the middle of the range.

It's primarily used to watch and report all the traffic in and out of your home. The Purple can act as a short-range wi-fi device, but I recommend you pair it with a good mesh system. If there was more than a small room, the wi-fi wouldn't cover it.

To get the most from it, you need to set your current routers into bridge or access point mode. You can connect it to an internet port on your computer, but it won't be as effective as a firewalls. I had it up and running in minutes, because the setup instructions are easy to follow. You can manage it via a mobile app on your phone. I use a fast routers, but I didn't see any issues with the network management company.

This rectangular purple box can be used for intrusion detection and prevention, as well as looking out for suspicious traffic. Network-wide ad-blocking will remove ads from all connected devices on your network. It works. You will still see some ads.

If you want to run your PureVPN service on the Firewalla Purple, you can set it up so that you don't need to install a PureVPN client on every device at home. It can be used as a VPNs when you are away on vacation. It means you can protect your devices by using your Firewalla at home.

It has the most comprehensive parental controls I have ever seen, with easy blocking of different categories or specific apps, as well as alerts for activities, scheduled access per device, safe search, and easy blocking of different categories or specific apps. You can block porn and gambling, get an alert when someone starts playing, and set downtime and bandwidth restrictions for your child's computer or console.

The app shows throughput. You can see how much data is uploaded and downloaded on your home network. Anything it deems suspicious is blocked. The data can be overwhelming at first. The purple blew up my phone. It is very restrictive by default, so you will have to teach it how to use your network.

I was surprised to see a list of thousands of blocked addresses within 24 hours. It takes time to understand what is happening. Rules are used to manage your network. You can block all of the addresses from a specific country, route video streaming traffic through a PureVPN, or segment your network to keep your smart home devices separate.
