The NHL Department of Player Safety announced Monday that the PittsburghPenguins forward had been suspended for four games for cross-checking the NashvillePredators defenseman in the face.

During the end of the second period of the Pens 3-2 overtime win against the Preds, there was an incident.

After a fight near the Nashville net, the Pens forward slashed the stick of the Preds forward and cross-checked him in the mouth.

He did not return to the game. The refs whistled a double-minor for a high stick and a minor for a slash.

In his 16-year NHL career, Malkin has not had a lot of trouble. He was fined and suspended for one game for cross-checking Michael Raffl. He was fined $5,000 for high sticking Jean-Gabriel Pageau.

One of the best forwards in the league is due in part to Pittsburgh selecting Malkin second overall in the 2004 draft. He has scored at least 30 goals in six of the last seven seasons.

The 35-year-old has helped the Pens win three Stanley Cups and has also won the Art Ross Trophy, Hart Trophy, Conn Smythe Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award over his career.

In 37 games this season, Malkin has 17 goals and 20 assists for a Pittsburgh team that is third in the Metropolitan Division with a 42-22-10 record.
