The New York Yankees were looking to add an All-Star to their roster, but fell short after expressing interest in both Carlos Correa, who signed with the Minnesota Twins, and Freddie Freeman, who joined the Los Angeles Dodgers.
According to WFAN Sports Radio, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Monday that the team did not make official contract offers to either player.
Cashman said that they never made an official offer, but they were in touch with their reps on what they were looking for.
The Yankees would have been well over the luxury tax if they had added either of the two free agents. The first level of the luxury tax threshold is $230 million, according to Spotrac.
The Yankees patched a hole at first base by adding Anthony Rizzo in a trade with the Chicago Cubs. He slashed.249/.340/.428 with eight home runs and 21RBI in 49 games with the Bronx Bombers last season, so it's not hard to see why Cashman was fine with him at first.
The Yankees acquired Isiah Kiner-Falefa from the Twins in exchange for third baseman Josh Donaldson. Kiner-Falefa has three hits in three games with the Yankees. Donaldson, who was acquired in that deal, is hitting.279/.279/.279 with one run and one hit in three games.
The Yankees took two of three games against the Red Sox. Over the last few seasons, they have fallen short of winning a World Series, but they are still one of the best teams in the league on paper.
The additions of Anthony Rizzo, Josh Donaldson, and Kiner-Falefa have made the Yankees look better than they did in 2020. If the team comes up short again this year, fans will be wondering about what could have been if they had signed in New York.
