The Brooklyn Nets are preparing for their play-in game Tuesday night against the Cleveland Cavaliers with Ben Simmons still uncertain about his status for the playoffs.
Nets coach Steve Nash said the organization would welcome the challenge of trying to integrate Simmons into their team during the playoffs, even though it remains unclear when Simmons might be able to make his season debut as he continues to deal with a back injury.
Nash said after Monday's practice that they would welcome another challenge.
If the Nets were to advance that far, Simmons could make his debut at some point in the first round, according to sources. Brooklyn would play the Boston Celtics in the playoffs if they win on Tuesday. Game 1 is on Sunday.
Simmons was acquired just before the trade deadline in a deal that sent James Harden and Paul Millsap to Philadelphia and brought Simmons and two future first-round picks to the Nets. Simmons, who requested a trade out of Philadelphia last summer due to his mental health, was optimistic about playing in March. His return was delayed because of back pain in February.
Simmons did some stretching and resistance-band work after Monday's practice, but he hasn't been cleared for contact.
Nash said that Brooklyn is willing to take Simmons, even though it might be difficult to add him late in the season.
Nash said that he would be adding a substantial talent to the team so they would really welcome him. We are in need of help so we would welcome the challenge of trying to incorporate him in a playoff situation where he has no history with the team. No minutes on the floor with his teammates to see how we can forge that understanding.
Nash said after Sunday's win over the Indiana Pacers that Simmons still hasn't been cleared to start running or conditioning, but players and coaches have said that Simmons remains in good spirits with his new team. The Nets are still hoping Simmons returns at some point, but they are focused on what they can control.
Curry said that they were worried about the play-in game and would try and integrate Ben as much as possible. I don't think anyone will be thinking about if Ben can come back. Maybe the coaches and front office, but as players, we are locked into the task at hand.
Curry said he would play Tuesday against the Cavs, despite missing Sunday's game due to left ankle soreness. Nash said that veteran guard Goran Dragic still hasn't cleared health and safety protocols and that he wasn't hopeful about his availability on Tuesday.
