The Kings are looking for a new coach.

Shams Charania and Sam Amick of The Athletic reported that the Kings have decided to part ways with the interim head coach.

It's possible that Gentry could stay with the team in a different role.

The Kings and Alvin Gentry are discussing a front-office role and a resolution is expected sometime this week, sources tell ESPN. Gentry has a year left on his contract.

The plan is to conduct a comprehensive coaching search immediately.

The interim position was held by Gentry because of the firing of Kings coach Luke Walton. The Kings wasted little time making a move after a slow start in November, as they moved on from the third head coach in as many seasons, after he went 31-41 in each of his first two.

The Kings are discussing potential benchmarks of success for the rest of the season that could serve as possible parameters on keeping the job on a long-term basis, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Kings failed to qualify for the playoffs or play-in tournament under the watch of Gentry. The Kings have missed the playoffs for the 16th straight season, which is a far cry from when they made the playoffs eight times in a row.

He has been a head coach for seven teams, including the Miami Heat, Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Clippers, Phoenix Suns and New Orleans Pelicans.

The Kings have been one of the worst teams in the league, but they have some talent in place.

The core of a playoff squad with the right surrounding pieces could be De'Aaron Fox, Harrison Barnes, and Domantas Sabonis, and the rookies could show their potential.

The Kings may not have been the best choice to give up a potential young star in Tyrese Haliburton, but the right coaching hire could help them turn things around in the Western Conference.
