The United Nations General Assembly voted on Thursday to suspend Russia from the U.N. Human Rights Council. The leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, Kirill, has been a loyal ally of Putin. He has been rebuked by religious leaders who say he has forsaken Christian teachings by supporting the Kremlin's destructive campaign. Kirill told worshipers at the Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos to respect official power in his most recent sermon. Kirill was enthroned in 2009 and is associated with the current political regime. Kirill said in the sermon that the Lord should help the Fatherland to unite. The ability to repel external and internal enemies was something he hoped the Russian people could maintain. Despite the fact that the vast majority of Ukrainians are Eastern Orthodox, Kirill has been a vociferous and consistent supporter of Putin. Nearly 300 leaders of the Ukrainian Orthodox church signed a letter accusing Kirill of moral crimes for his endorsement of the unprovoked attack on Ukraine. The Ukrainian clergymen wrote that their position was consistent with the church tradition. Pope Francis and members of Kirill's own church were among the Christian leaders who denounced the invasion. Kirill's views are shared by most Russian clergy. The invasion of Ukraine was a battle against the Antichrist, said Metropolitan Mitrofan of Murmansk. The Orthodox Church in Ukraine was not a real church, according to Mitrofan, angering both Putin and Kirill. Kirill is a symbol of the resurgence of the Orthodox Church under Putin, who has used religion to bolster his nationalism. Kirill criticized Western Europe for straying from Christianity four years after he decried same-sex marriage. Russian society has become more religious since the fall of the Soviet Union, but Kirill has not escaped scrutiny. In 2012 a photograph of Kirill wearing a $40,000 watch was altered to remove it, leading to mockery and ridicule. Two years ago, he was seen wearing a $16,000 watch without any concern for public backlash. In late February, when Putin first decided to launch an invasion of Ukraine, he described it as an effort to destroy the government of a country led by a Jewish president. Since 1991, Ukraine has sought a different course from the Soviet legacy. Putin viewed the desire for autonomy by Kyiv as an insult. He invaded again eight years later, expecting an easy victory, only to face protests at home and condemnation abroad. The Russian Orthodox Church has been a key ally of the Kremlin. Kirill's seeming lack of concern for the plight of ordinary Ukrainians has renewed criticism of his tenure. Kirill has made no secret of his true sympathies, even though he has made generic calls for peace. Kirill's sermon earlier this month was condemned because he imagined the same fake unity of Slavic peoples that Putin has invoked and Ukrainians have rejected. Kirill said on the same day that a lot of the world was seeing the images of slaughtered civilians that the word independence is often applied to almost all countries of the world. The main cathedral of the Russian armed forces was the site of the April 3 sermon. Kirill did not name the evil force he had in mind, but Putin blamed the United States for the success of the resistance to Russia. Kirill said that the country was a peace-loving one and that it had suffered from wars like few other European nations. We don't want war or doing something that could hurt others. We love our Fatherland and will be ready to defend it in the way that only Russians can. The leader of the Greek Orthodox in the United States rebuked Kirill for his sermon on April 3. This is a sad moment for our church, and the whole world is watching it, said the archbishop in a speech the next day. After the April 3 sermon, the former archbishop of Canterbury called for the World Council of Churches to expel Russia. Lord Williams said in an interview that the riot act has to be read.
