As a native to the Philadelphia area, I discovered what I was missed most when I moved away.Gabi Stevenson/Insider
  • I moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, in October after living in Philadelphia for most of my life.

  • I miss the history and hustle of Philadelphia, even though I like my new city.

  • I still crave hoagies from Wawa or a visit to one of Philadelphia's many museums.

My move from Philadelphia to Grand Rapids made clear what I was missing and what I can't live without.

I knew the adjustment to Grand Rapids would be difficult.

I was born and raised in Montgomery County next to Philadelphia, but my upbringing was shaped by its culture and grit, and I am a die-hard Philly sports fan.

When I left Philadelphia, I knew there would be things I would miss about it.

Philadelphia has a lot of weird museums.

Philadelphia is famous for its art museum steps and the statue ofRocky, but it is also home to some very cool galleries and exhibits.

Pizza Brain is a small pizzeria located in the Fishtown neighborhood. The Fabric Workshop and Museum is located in Center City. You can walk through the Magic Gardens on South Street. The Mütter Museum is one of Philadelphia's strangest museums.

I went through most of the museums in downtown Grand Rapids quickly, and although I found them impressive, I still prefer the variety that I can find in Philadelphia.

There is a Wawa-shaped hole in my heart.

Many Philadelphians rely on the convenience store for their morning coffee or afternoon snack.

I missed building my own hoagies when I was a child, I grew up across the street from a Wawa. Tastykake sells many of its delicious snack cakes at Wawa. I used to buy food and snacks at Wawa before I went on a day trip.

Wawa will always have my loyalty even though it has been compared to other convenience stores.

I don't have access to major league sporting events.

People who grew up in Philadelphia know about Lincoln Financial Field, Citizens Bank Park and the Wells Fargo Center. The stadiums are home to the Philadelphia Eagles, Philadelphia 76ers, and Philadelphia Flyer.

I would go to the Philadelphia Sports Complex to see fans tailgating. South Philadelphia would be hopping as passionate fans streamed into the arenas when several teams played on the same night.

Detroit is about two and a half hours away from where I live. I don't feel the energy of game night in Philly.

It was easy to drive from the Philadelphia area to the Jersey Shore.

Say what you want about the Jersey Shore, but I have a soft spot for the beaches in New Jersey.

It can get crowded on holiday weekends and the water isn't the prettiest shade of blue, but the Jersey Shore holds a lot of memories for people in the Philadelphia area. The food on the boardwalk is greasy.

I am excited to explore the beaches on the lakes in Western Michigan, even though I am hundreds of miles away from an ocean.

There are many authentic Puerto Rican food options in Philadelphia.

I loved going to the city to eat authentic Puerto Rican food.

Freddy and Tony's in North Philly and Boricua Restaurant in Northern Liberties have great food that reminds me of visiting my family on the island. I have been to both of these restaurants with my Puerto Rican mother, and she gave everything she had.

I want to try a few Puerto Rican places in Grand Rapids. I am excited to compare.

Cool city fashion is something I saw more in Philadelphia than in Grand Rapids.

Every city has its own culture and style.

In Philadelphia, I often saw people dressed in different styles in different neighborhoods. I don't think it compares to places like New York or Los Angeles in terms of fashion, but Philadelphians have diversity in style that I always appreciated.

The view of the Philadelphia skyline made me happy.

Philadelphia has more skyscrapers than Grand Rapids, but it is a smaller city. I still miss seeing the skyline of my hometown when I take the train into town.

The history and culture of the area was always reminded of by the shapes of One Liberty Place and Philadelphia City Hall.

The history of the City of Brotherly Love can be found everywhere.

The Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and the Constitution Center are all visited by Philadelphia-area school kids. Elfreth's Alley is the oldest continuously inhabited residential street in the nation and it feels like it was from the colonial era.

Philadelphia has a unique history as well as much of America's. There are blue historical signs around the city that give brief histories of significant events and places, such as the Arch Street Meeting House where activists planned a march for lesbian and gay rights in 1979.

According to Atlas Obscura, the cave of America's first doomsday cult is in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia has a hustle and bustle that I want to experience again.

Many people don't like large cities because of the noise and fast paced life. I have always wanted to live in a large city as an adult, so the noise and vibrantness of Philly always made me want to do so. It was hard to escape the vibrant city of Philadelphia, with people running by you to catch the subway and lines outside bars full of enthusiasm.

After almost 25 years in one city, it is nice to take a break. On a weekend night, Grand Rapids has a calmness that never overwhelms me.

There are many late-night activities in the City of Brotherly Love.

I moved to Grand Rapids during the Pandemic so I want to give it the benefit of the doubt when it comes to businesses closing earlier. In my first few months here, I found that most of the places I wanted to order food from were closed earlier.

It is a good thing for my wallet, but I always enjoyed going to a bar at midnight in Philadelphia or ordering late-night food in the city. The Insomnia Cookies CookieLab was open until 3 a.m. and was an attractive option.

I don't miss traffic and parking.

No one likes traffic, but no one tells you that in Grand Rapids.

Getting into Grand Rapids is easy during rush hours. Once you get in, street parking is a lot easier to find and parking prices are not as high as they are in Philly.

If there is an accident on the highway, you will be stuck there for a while, and trying to get into Philadelphia at the wrong time can set you back several hours. It is one of the most annoying things about living in a big city.

The lack of public restrooms in Philadelphia is something I can't do without.

The public restrooms in Grand Rapids were one of the first things I noticed. I used to have to hold it when I was shopping in the Philadelphia area. If I wanted to use the bathroom, I would have to find a coffee shop or a fast-food restaurant. It can be difficult to find a bathroom in Center City.

When I went to my first thrift store in Michigan, I was surprised to see that most of the stores had a public bathroom.
