In the next few days, all users will be able to close the YouTube app and continue watching their video in a small pop-up window, thanks to the picture-in-picture support that will be rolling out in the next few days.
Many people outside of the US have been able to get picture-in-picture support to work for them, so the company could make it available globally.
At one point, it was thought that picture-in-picture mode would remain a premium-only feature, until it was clarified that it would eventually be available to all users.
On Sunday, in a reply to a user having problems accessing the experimental feature, YouTube said a picture in picture would be available in a matter of days.
Are you using an iOS smartphone? If so, the Picture-in-Picture feature is still rolling out & will be available in a matter of days across all iOS 15+ devices. Tweet back @ us if needed. — TeamYouTube (@TeamYouTube) April 10, 2022
Picture-in-picture is a feature that allows videos to be watched while using other apps. The picture-in-picture button can be used to move a video to a smaller window over the Home Screen or other apps.
The testing period for the feature has been extended several times in an effort to improve the experience before an official launch, and it now appears that the company is almost ready for it to go live.
The picture-in-picture feature on the video sharing website has been out of stock for a long time. Some users have turned off built-in parameters on the YouTube site that prevent picture-in-picture. Those workarounds will no longer be needed once official support arrives.
