Gary Brown, who was the running backs coach at Wisconsin last season but was unable to travel with the team to the Las Vegas Bowl because of medical issues, died Sunday. Brown was older. He is survived by his wife, daughters and son. Brown, who coached 11 seasons in the NFL, gained the respect of the UW coaches and players during his lone season on Paul Chryst's staff. When asked about missing Brown, tailback Chez Mellusi said he probably wouldn't be here if it wasn't for him. The most important thing for me was his health. He was given a clean bill of health after undergoing surgery. Brown was one of several Dallas Cowboys assistants who were not retained by new head coach Mike McCarthy. The doctors found a tumor near Brown's pancreas. Brown did not coach in 2020 and then joined the staff of the University of Wisconsin. The Badgers traveled to Las Vegas and defeated Arizona State while Brown was undergoing treatment. Brown would not be able to coach this season because of his condition, though the university had plans in place to assist him financially. Brown explained how he had decided to live despite being twice diagnosed with cancer. He said, "You really think about what's next when you're alone and sitting by yourself."
