The creator of the 1619 Project and a cable news host had a lively debate this week about the greatest generation. People of African descent living in America during the Second World War were suppressed by the government.

Chris Wallace invited the creator of The New York Times' controversial series the 1619 Project to be one of his first guests on his show.

The 1619 Project claims that America cannot separate the reality of Jim Crow, voter suppression, and segregation from the legacy of those born between 1901 and 1927, which is known as the G.I. Generation.

Wallace quoted a Howard faculty member who said that our democracy would most likely look different without the strenuous and patriotic efforts of Black Americans. It may not be a democracy at all.

We like to call those who lived during World War II the greatest generation, but that doesn't allow us to ignore the fact that many of this generation fought for democracy abroad, while brutally suppressing democracy for millions of American citizens.

Wallace asked her if she was in any way minimizing the terrible racial legacy. Is it possible that you overstating in some of these things?

Hannah-Jones asked Wallace how he would define democracy.

Wallace answer, "rule by the people", sparked a back-and-forth that showed two different mindsets about American history.

If you have half of the country, where it is in some states, in many other states, and in many other places, you can't vote.

The young adults from the ethnic neighborhoods in Brooklyn and South Philly were declared not to bebrut by the former Fox News staple.

Hannah-Jones stood firm, volleying back.

Wallace was not sure. He said they weren't. You don't tell me that a kid coming off a farm in Indiana or a kid from Brooklyn was suppressing Black people.

Indiana has the largest Klan population in the United States. Hannah-Jones said that the Klan was reached first in Indiana.

Wallace said that the average age of a soldier in the Second World War was in his 20s or 30s.

She replied, "But a 30-year-old is a fully grown person who can serve in Congress, who can be the mayor, who can act, act, act, act, act, act, act, act, act, act, act, act, act, act, act These are not babies.

She is not alone.

In December of 2021, a study called "The American Soldier in World War II" was released by Virginia Tech and funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Edward J.K. Gitre, the university's assistant professor of history, determined that the complexion of the generation is more complicated than just the traditional heroic view.

He said in a recent interview that it does speak to a generation.

The 300,000 surveys that survived over time were guaranteed anonymity by the study.

In August 1944, an American soldier wrote in a questionnaire that white supremacy must be maintained.

If necessary, he will fight to prevent racial equality. I won't salute a negro officer and I won't take orders from a negro. I am sick of the way the army treats black soldiers. Segregation of the races must continue.

He was not the only one. A soldier said that God has placed a barrier between them and they must live, fight and play separately.

The Washington Post reports that the study of approximately 500,000 soldiers was massive, consisting of 65,000 pages in the National Archives.

Conservative Republicans linked the 1619 Project findings to their attack on critical race theory being taught in American primary and secondary schools.

The members of the GOP argue that the research is skewed and that it makes young white children feel uneasy about the legacy of systemic racism that their ancestors may or may not have participated in.
