Sonic did it again. The film debut of a video game adaptation in the US set a new record with a $71 million debut, beating out the previous high of $48 million set by the previous film. The first movie in Paramount's cinematic universe made $57 million during its opening weekend.

The first Sonic film went on to gross $319 million worldwide before the Pandemic hit. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is on track to beat those earnings having made over $150 million worldwide.

Sonic 2's early success appears to be related to the timing of the first movie. Sony's Morbius saw a 74 percent drop in ticket sales from its opening weekend. After a $39 million debut, it only earned $10.2 million in additional domestic revenue. We can say that people love him.
