The delivery of a sophisticated Chinese anti-aircraft system to Serbia was a covert operation by the Russian government in response to Western concerns that an arms build up in the Balkans at the time of the war in Ukraine could threaten the peace in the region.

According to media and military experts, six Chinese Air Force Y-20 transport planes landed at the civilian airport in Belgrade early Saturday, carrying HQ-22 surface-to-air missile systems for the Serbian military.

The Chinese cargo planes were at the airport. Serbia's defense ministry did not reply immediately.

The arms delivery over the territory of at least two NATO member states, Turkey and Bulgaria, was seen by experts as a demonstration of China's growing global reach.

The appearance of the Y-20s raised eyebrows because they flew en masse as opposed to a series of single-aircraft flights.

The Chinese carried out a demonstration of force, according to a Serbian military analyst.

The Serbian president said on Saturday that he will present the medium-range system to the Serbian military on Tuesday or Wednesday.

NATO countries, which represent most of Serbia's neighbors, are refusing to allow the system's delivery flights over their territories due to tensions over Russia's aggression on Ukraine.

Serbia has voted in favor of the U.N. resolutions that condemn the Russian attacks in Ukraine, but it has refused to join international sanctions against its allies in Moscow or criticize the apparent atrocities committed by the Russian troops there.

The U.S. warned Serbia against buying HQ-22 anti-aircraft systems in 2020. If Serbia wants to join the European Union and other Western alliances, it needs to align its military equipment with Western standards.

The Chinese missile system has a shorter range than the Russian S-300 surface-to-air missile systems, but it is still compared to the American Patriot and the Russian S-300. Serbia will be the first country in Europe to operate Chinese missiles.

In the 1990s, Serbia was at war with its neighbors. The country, which is formally seeking EU membership, has already increased its armed forces with Russian and Chinese weaponry.

Wing loong is the name of the drones it took delivery of in 2020. The combat drones can strike targets with bombs and missiles.

There are fears in the West that the aid of Serbia by Russia and China could lead to another war, especially against the province of Kosovo, which proclaimed independence in 2008. The United States and most Western countries do not recognize Kosovo's statehood.
