In early April, why talk about lawns? The forsythia is in bloom and there is a crowded lineup of others standing in the wings to add to the show. This season of color seems to be centered around lawns.

Gardeners love to hate lawns, so I might get some hate mail for devoting valuable April garden column space to the lawn. The glitterati love to look down at anyone who would dare to look at a lawn.

Sometimes it seems that at garden gatherings the conversation is taken up with attendees outdoing one another with their lawn-minimalist pronouncements. Tsk, tsk, tsk...

I'm not sure what the origin of the disdain is for a landscape feature that takes less than one second per square foot per week to mow. We're supposed to replace the lawn with flowers, plants, and herbs that will make our kids smarter, our world a better place, and our future a bright and shiny one.

The thing about those lawn alternatives is that you can kick a soccer ball around with the kids.

Should you mulch? There are 5 things to do for your garden.

I stand for the grass just as the Lorax does for the trees.

In the landscape, lawns are useful. Traditional grass spans provide for active use of the lawn area and provide the always essential negative space in a designed landscape. We need to think about the birds and bees. It is good to plant diverse gardens to serve a lot of wildlife. That's important, but we count as well.

There is no need for anyone to make you feel bad about the lawn if it works for you.

Let's go to the lawn. If a lawn is emerald green with nether a thin or bare patch, it's a perfect lawn. If you want to improve the quality of your lawn, this is a good time to do it, and here are a few tips and things to know.

How to diagnose a problem with your lawn

The first thing to do if you have bare spots or a thin lawn is to determine the cause. Lots of lawn-related frustration can be found in little lawns and large dogs. Grasses can be left with little ecological space due to the shade and root competition. Poor grass and bare spots can be caused by soil compaction. There is a seemingly endless list of insect and disease problems to consider.

Unless you know the cause, you can't fix a problem.

Mowing incorrect, fertilization too early, and other ways are ruining your lawn.

What's the best time to plant grass seed?

Grass seed will grow better in the spring and fall than in the heat of summer. The cool weather allows the germinating seed to get a root in the ground and start to produce leaves before the summer season. That is the reason we are talking about lawns at the beginning of spring.

Why you shouldn't use pre-emergent herbicides on your lawn

Keep your lawn mowed to a height of 2 to 2-1/2 inches tall throughout the fall.

If you've already treated the lawn with a weed preventer, you're in trouble. Pre-emergent herbicides lay down a thin layer of product that kills young, newly emerging weeds. You have to wait at least 90 days to start new seed if you have already applied it.

You should wait until fall to avoid the heat of the summer.

You can see them all over the place. Grass seed pelletized products can be found in both garden centers and big-box stores. Most of these products work. They are very expensive. The price of putting down Ipe flooring is about the same as putting down a container cover. Ipe, also known as Brazilian walnuts, is one of the densest woods in the world.

If you have bare spots that need a reseeding, you can do it at a low cost by lightly raking up the top 1-inch of soil, spreading seed at the package rate, and scratching up the top 1-inch of soil with a metal rake.

Give it a spray or two after that to keep it from drying out. If the grass is tall enough to be mown, give it a shot of dilute fertilization, which could be half the recommended rate.

If anyone gives you a hard time about it, give me a call. You can borrow my croquet mallet.
