Russian troops took highly radioactive 'souvenirs' looted from Chernobyl, Ukraine says

The laboratories in the Chernobyl exclusion zone were taken from by Russian soldiers.

The State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management said on Facebook that Russian forces entered two laboratories in Chernobyl and destroyed them.

Russian troops entered a repository of ionizing radiation sources in the Ecocentre laboratory and damaged 133 sources with a total activity of seven million becquerels, the agency said.

The agency says that it is comparable to 700 kilogram of radioactive waste with the presence of alpha andgamma radiation.

Even a small amount could be deadly if mishandled.

Russian troops stole computers and office equipment from the Institute for Nuclear Safety.

The agency said that it is not known where the sources of ionizing radiation and samples of fuel-filled materials are now.

It is possible that the items were left elsewhere in the exclusion zone, but it is most likely that the items were taken by Russian troops.

The agency said the Russian troops should win an award. The tongue-in-cheek prize recognizes people who accidentally kill or sterilize themselves.
