  • Newsmax anchor Rob Finnerty made a joke about a ceasefire in Ukraine.

  • Finnerty interrupted his show when he heard that Russia had surrendered.

  • Sources told The Daily Beast that Chris Ruddy wasurious at the joke.

Multiple sources told The Daily Beast that Newsmax employees are upset at anchor Rob Finnerty after he lied on air about Russia surrendering to Ukraine.

The remark was made on an episode of the morning show that aired on April 1. He was playing along with the other host and guests as they joked about April fools, but when the words "Breaking News" flashed on the screen, he grabbed a mock earpiece.

He claimed that Russia had surrendered and that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin had reached a tentative ceasefire agreement.

Mark Halperin was one of the show's guests. Finnerty interrupted Halperin to say that the whole thing was a joke and mock the others for falling for it.

Halperin asked Rob why he fell for it. I was more confident that you wouldn't abuse the Newsmax name by pretending it was real. I had too much faith in you.

Sources told The Daily Beast that executives like CEO Chris Ruddy are furious at a joke being made about an ongoing conflict that has included possible war crimes and taken thousands of lives since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.

One Newsmax staffer told The Daily Beast that how anyone would think that was acceptable is beyond them.

The staff in the control room were unaware of the material that Finnerty would use for the prank, but he told them to have the chyron ready.

Newsmax did not reply immediately.
