There was a mass grave in the suburb of Bucha.

The site near the Church of St. Andrew and Pyervozvannoho All Saints was visited by representatives from the Ukrainian government on Friday. The bodies were pulled from the ditch and lined up in rows. The dead could be examined and an initial identification could be made.

Several dozen local residents arrived a few hours into the process. They walked through the church's gates.

Many looked away from what was in front of them as they made their way to the mass grave. People took in the bodies of loved ones.

Russian soldiers occupied the town of Bucha for several weeks. Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed that the bodies were staged after the Russians left the town.

There is mounting evidence of the horror that unfolded in this town.

The New York Times found that bodies, some of them bound, had appeared around the area before Russian forces left. Ukrainian officials and human rights organizations are looking into killings in the area.

Satellite images show the trench where bodies were found. Photos of dead bodies were quickly distributed by journalists as they arrived in the town.

Gloves and boots were seen poking out of the earth at the site of the mass grave. More bodies were found later.
