There is a war in Ukraine. More than a month after the Russian army invaded, more and more Russians are fighting with Ukrainians.

Even as they take up arms against their countrymen, the fighters describe Putin as the enemy. They range from captured Russian soldiers to political dissidents like the 30-year-old Russian who asked to be called "Yan", an IT worker who now spends his days scouting, identifying potential targets and bringing medical supplies to Ukrainian soldiers on the front.

No Russian should have crossed the border with a weapon in his hand, according to a man who has served in the country's territorial defense forces. He moved to Kyiv because he was afraid of imprisonment after his office was raided. A self-proclaimed "anarchist,"Yan had participated in demonstrations against Putin's rule.

Vitya is the nom de guerre chosen by a 25-year-old Russian political science student who said he joined the Ukrainian territorial defense forces to continue his fight against the Russian government. He said that his parents in the Russian capital know that he is in Ukraine, but they don't know that he is donating blood or helping the Ukrainian war effort.

If some Russians were challenging Putin before the war began, the conduct of the war has brought in other Russians who are unhappy with the country's military. The force was criticized for its performance on the battlefield in the first weeks of the war. Russia's military is facing allegations of war crimes after it retreated from the suburbs of Kyiv.

The Ukrainian government has cast the war as a contest between the forces of darkness and light. Three men wearing military fatigues and black balaclavas appeared in front of a group of reporters in Kyiv on April 5 and announced a new battalion made up of Russian citizens. They said they were morally appalled by Moscow's lack of discipline and disregard for human life.

One of the unnamed men said the Russian government tricked them into going to a country that was going to kill them. There are no fascists, no Nazis, but a civilian population.

He said he witnessed the atrocities committed by the Russian army. President Joe Biden called for war crimes charges to be brought against Putin after seeing images of mass graves and streets strewn with dead civilians in a commuter town.

The speaker said he was a sergeant in the Russian special forces. He urged the other Russian forces to lay down their arms and fight for their future.

Instructions for donating to the battalion were offered by a sign on the table as the masked men spoke. Instructions for Russians to join their legion are included in the Telegram channel of the unit. The white-blue-white flag that has become symbolic of Russia's anti-war movement was on the men's camouflage sleeves.

Russian defectors are welcome in the city. The Ukrainian parliament passed a new law that will award $1 million to any Russian soldier who surrenders with a plane. A captured tank will be worth $100,000 and smaller military equipment will be worth $10,000. The first vice-speaker of the Ukrainian parliament said the rewards would motivate the army. The law comes after a previous offer by the Ukrainian government. Ukrainian authorities said hundreds of Russian soldiers deserted their army.

It is difficult to determine the extent of support for the war in Russia. Russians face consequences for protesting or opposing Russia. Recent public opinion polls show over 80 percent of Russians view Putin favorably, but many may be afraid of expressing their true opinion if new censorship laws can send people to jail for up to 15 years for fake news about the war.

The Ukrainian government has welcomed foreigners. An estimated 20,000 people from 52 countries, including the United States, have signed up to defend Ukraine since President Zelensky established an international legion. The members of the Freedom for Russia refused to say how many men were in their battalion, only that they had received over 300 applications in a single day.

The IT professional said his platoon of around 40 men contains several other Russians and he knows of more in other parts of the country.

You know, why not? Ukrainians are going through a lot of psychological trauma. I'm not offended.
